Purpose, Alternatives and Navigation
Blogging has become popular but what purpose is it serving? How well? What are the alternatives? How do they compare?

Purpose Served:
It appears that the purpose of blogging is to create a body of knowledge with freedom for contribution and comment by all authors and readers. Its appeal seems to be the ease and speed with which blogs come into existence and grow.

How Well:
Very well, with reference to freedom to post and comment. With reference to accuracy, authenticity, reliability, application etc., not much. Perhaps that is the domain of dictionaries, encyclopedia, scholarly publications etc. But it would help if an information seeker can navigate with tips and suggestions (information road maps).

Alternatives:
Some of them are traditional and Internet publications of books and journals, Knowledge Managements Systems, eLearning Systems, Search Engines, Semantic Web etc. Here again it would help to know the distinctions and how to navigate them for different information needs.

How do they compare:
There must be some comprehensive reports?let?s find them. If not let us collectively author them.
