So you are saying...

That Win xx Srv having a minority presence in the server closet where BSD has had a major presense does not make BSD a mass market product?

That people who don't like change would pay money to have a newer version of an old, POS software that they will upgrade than pay for a better product? Wouldn't they just stick with the old crap and not pay anything? Especially if the better product is free?

That these lazy OSS users would pay US$200 per system to upgrade a comercially licensed product that is available under the GPL than type emerge all at the prompt to get their entire system upgraded for free? Remember that we are talking about the OSS market here going comercial and competing against itself, not the current commercial market competing with OSS.

That although they will be killed when just getting started, they will have a chance to get hugh? Or are you talking about getting hugh and then going all Capitalist on the project? The GPL would protect current users and the competition would protect the rest. Those that don't want to change will stay with Red Hat 12.4.4.5.8.02_17 and the rest will change to Fedora Core 14.8.06 kernel or maybe Debian or SUsE or gentoo or Linspire or Knoppix, all with the latest Linux kernel.

Maybe if Linux itself went commercial? Then it would branch. You can get the old Linux 12.4 kernel for free or the new 14.8 kernel at US$200.00 a pop or get the GNU/LinDeux 1.0 kernel for free or FreeBSD or OpenBSD or NetBSD or GNU/BSD or the GNU/BSDeux 1.0 kernel.

Change is painfull but staying where you are is free. MS cannot charge you for not upgrading from Win95. They can only release the code to crackers to take your system down so that you will have to buy the latest Windows to keep your existing application software investment.

With open source, if Gentoo starts charging me to use the emerge system, I can always do manual upgrades like Unix users have done for years. If they start charging for all downloads, I can move to FreeBSD and still keep my existing investment in OOo, The GIMP, Flight Gear Flight Simulator and every OSS app that I currently have. No tie-in. If I am lazy, I can still run Gentoo 2005.1 for the next ten years until my then 12 year-old son upgrades me.

The system protects itself. You can still make a living doing OSS/GPL but you can't rip off the world.

P.S., open source software and GPL software are not synonymous. All GPL software is open source but not all open source software has to be GPL.
