- Why compete on a free browser?

Google is a public company. They have to make a profit. Why would a Google branded browser be a source of profit? Let alone a desktop.
Windows is ubiquitous. Google can provide search to Windows and make a profit. A version for any other operating system is necessary PR.
Given that, why should Google try to expand beyond search?
People who lose money on a stock have a better chance suing management for its dumb moves these days. I hope that when Google explains its plans there's a plausible reason to expect profits.
