Renaissance all over again
This is starting to sound like the old days when wealthy Italians would support artists such as Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, etc. Back then, the patrons got the glory of having star artists and had some influence over the themes of the resulting art.

Today, wealthy corporations (IBM, Google, Intel, OSRM, HP, ...) sponsor F/OSS programmers. In return, they get the PR benefits and have some input into the direction of the projects.

Nothing new under the Sun, indeed.
