Region codes are obsolete anyway
Across most of the world, you cannot buy a DVD player that can't be made region-free is five minutes. Most stores will do it while you wait. How do they get the "debug" codes for this? Easy, the DVD player makers leak them, because they know a player without this hack simply will not sell. Most DVD rental outlets near here have shelves of Region 1 disks in addition to the "legal" Region 2 disks. These are all real paid-for DVDs, it's just that they are grey imports shipped from the US. Personally, I don't own a Region 1 player, and I've not hacked my Sony player because it's too old to hack. But I'm very much the exception. In most stores, they will ask you if you want it done when you buy, so even the non-techies have the choice.
