Region codes were a silly idea; they can be circumvented on every DVD player I recently tested when evaluating one for my family room.

I do not know the exact details of the encryption used on DVDs, but believe it is impossible to copy a DVD from one player to another without DeCSS or a similar program, you can't do a "bit for bit" transfer using any licenced DVD player (that is, any commercially available hardware disc reader). The player itself modifies the bits as they are read, so if you copy the data stream to another disc, the resultant files not identical to the files on the original disc and will not be read correctly by a DVD player.

However, there is nothing to stop you intercepting the video-out from your player and digitising the signal to a digital video format, say WMF or QuickTime. Some loss of quality is certain - but for pirate videos, quality is not an issue.
