Here's another way of looking at it.
Google is selling the name of another entity for potential profit for itself and the purchaser of the name. The purchaser doesn't have much of a chance of getting any rights to use the name from the entity it represents, but it has a chance from Google or anybody else that can sell the name with the potential for profit. It seems there is something not right about this, but that is probably for lawyers and deep-pocketed companies to hash out on a per-instance basis. I'll bet we see decisions on both sides of the issue depending on who buys the best lawyers or maybe another angle besides the trademark one.
