How does this solve that problem?
---Just think. You purchased $5000 worth of Music from an online music vendor. Then they go out of business. You can't 'authenticate' yourself any more so there goes $5000 worth of music down the drain.---

Sort of. With Apple's iTMS store, your music will keep working just fine. But, if you ever want to move it to a new computer, you'd be screwed by lack of ability to authorize that new machine. You could always burn it to disc and listen to it just fine, but you'd lose either sound quality or flexibility, two things you paid for.

But how does having one unified DRM system solve this problem? If I buy a song from Napster using this unified DRM system, and Napster goes out of business, wouldn't I still be in the same boat? Do you think these competing companies are going to go for a DRM system that they can't control and authorize themselves?

I say that the tech manufacturers should show some balls, and do away with any DRM in their products. It's not like the RIAA/MPAA are all of a sudden going to decide to stop selling their products and stop making money. Use the VCR as an example, Sony went ahead and put it out regardless of the wishes of the MPAA pigopolists. It caught on wildly, and the MPAA had to adapt to it, and now they make more money from video than from ticket sales. Get rid of the DRM and everybody wins.
