tell me what's important--I have ten minutes
Many of the posts here deal with journalism's association with (or lack of) objectivity. This is really only part of the issue. Before you have (or do not have) objectivity, you must decide "WHAT" is (or is not) the news. Simply by giving coverage to one topic and ignoring another you have already slid halfway down the slipperey slope.

There is as yet no Supreme Filter to identify what is truly significant from what is trivial or irrelevant. It helps when lots of different people with seasoned judgement and basically good intentions "cover" some event/issue since what one reporter overlooks another will often highlight.

Unfortunately the news consumer has very little time or energy to devote to even the digested output of today's mass media. Endless blogs of unknown quality may, in the long run, simply add more background noise to the situation rather than help focus public attention where it may be needed the most.
