I wonder
if the contact at panix used a non-complex password when he/she registered the domain to begin with. Since they have been around so long, maybe they haven't been performing proper password maintenance.

There is also the scenario where they could have prevented this by only allowing their registrar to make DNS changes. A lot of "admins" believe they can manage everything themselves, and don't realize the amount work that it can involve.

I don't know how it happened, but I am real curious.
