- Adding a new protocol
-
The first thing to consider is the importance of readability in the success of XML. The fact the the files can be not only read, but also understood or interpreted easily, is paramount to its quick acceptance. XML looks SIMPLE!
A binary XML would mean that we are back to data that is unreadable (un-debugable, un-correctable?) unless we go through an application layer, a black box. Converting XML to a binary form would have an impact similar to going from HTML to a standardized, but binary, approach to designing web pages.
The solution to this problem doesn't lie in the message itself, but in the medium used: RSS feeds cannot replace newspapers (which are a very inefficient way to distribute information, in our age...)
A new protocol must be added to OSI's Transport layer, to handle compression of data streams. The compressed tunnel should be called when both ends can accept it. It can also be merged to an encryption solutions, to create an encrypted-compressed tunnel for heavy traffics, such as XML or large HTML documents. - Posted by: dlenoir@...
