Not the only problem.
That only solves the bandwidth usage as the file goes through the network. Things like ssh tunneling do this current and work effectively. But there is still the problem of parsing a big file for the app after it gets unzipped.

A binary version of a xml doc would have a much better ratio for description:actual data. In binary form, you have a lot less useless 1s and 0s to work through or convert into the right format for the app.

It is nice, but when needed, I believe it is best to just use a binary format and leave xml out of it. XML makes data extremely portable with the trade off of requiring extra work to get at it. If you want high efficiency, go back to binary formats with loss of portability.
