Best deal ever
AOL took its huge stash of cash that it got from clueless, stupid, bubble day-traders and bought something substantial. When the bust hit, AOL kept its value because it had a "real" corporation as opposed to an internet "ghost" company. If AOL hadn't done this deal, all of that money would have evaporated, and AOL would be history today. It may have been a bad deal for Time-Warner, but it certainly wasn't for AOL.
