It is useless and can never work
Desktop search is a misnomer. In order to search on CONTENT, you need metadata for each and every file. Who will provide this metadata (in a standard format) has not been determined (or even evaluated). If you search on file name, then what good is it? I can put a porn movie in a file called "My favorite recipies.avi" - can the desktop search figure that one out when I search for "porn"? No it can't - so it is useless.
