More of the same or something distinct and superior?
The rush to ?Desktop-Search? is surprising. But ?More of the same? is disappointing. Is any one analyzing ?Why and For-who?, ?Superior in what way??

Multiple-search fields is welcome but Windows offers that as a standard feature under Search with categories For (Files and Folders, Internet Audio / Video, People), On (the Internet), Using (Microsoft Outlook..).

?Doing what every body is doing? will only increase the volume but not value. Distinction in what is done and its usefulness to the users are primary and paramount in any product or service (facilities). It is not clear in what way Yahoo?s multi-field search is distinct and superior.

Published literature on Categorization, Classification, Meta-tagging (manual, semi-automatic, and automatic), Query formulation, Interactivity hold out a lot more than what one finds in popular search services.

What you call ?smaller companies? seem to be doing better?add to your list Answers.com, Infolution ?

If the ?big companies? want to ?get better? help is available, but to find the relevant sources, they must use search methodologies not yet known to their search engines.
