Because that's not what RIAA or MPAA wants
Simply because it's not thier copyrights that they are worried about. It's the copyrights of people who can now compete with them. If they allow the web to used by just anyone wishing to hauk thier copyright protected contents then all they have done is created a system that will put there clients out of business.

Think of it like this. You have lucrative business supplying a service for widgets that everyone needs. You are the gateway to all the widget makers and through you they sell the widgets after paying hefty fee. Now would you make a system that allows for those widgets to be sold where they don't need to use your services anymore? So I'd think any company in this posision would do everything in thier power to make it so a service like this doesn't exist. Still you can't stop progress.

The reality of things is Piracy will happen. It will boom with P2P for a time then it will work its way around that fixes the piracy problem. The problem of the RIAA's members running an outdated business model will still exist after the piracy problem disappears and it will disappear. Mark my words, by 2007 it will cost prohibitive to swap files. Right now bandwith is free but that will be short lived, bandwidth caps are coming and many ISPs are already implementing them. I know guy who got dinged with a $400 internet bill for one month due to people downloading from his PC. Whatch what happens in the next few years. The decline in swapping will be noticable. Also as music moves to Audio DVD quality and Movies go to HD quality it will cheaper just to buy the DVDs than to download the ripped content. Any swapping you have going on will be low quality rips that really show how low quality they are on the new equipment. If anything these rips will be nothing but advertising for the high quality products you can buy.

This future is something RIAA doesn't want and the MPAA fears the same thing may happen to the major studios too.
