No competition yet
At this point, it is Google's race to lose because IMO they don't have any real competition yet.

I've been interested in search technology ever since Altavista made their engine available for Intranet sites back in the mid 90's. And then I Yahoo'ed like everyone else until Google made it's appearance on the web. Since then I've tested numberous search engines but always come home to Google.

Microsoft wants to own search like it does the desktop and has enough money to pour down the black hole of msn search for a long time. They may yet come up with a good search site but they have a long way to go.

If Google plays their cards right they can do to Microsoft's search ambitions what Linux has done to their dream of owning the data center.
