Disappearing in the middle of the night...
What country are you talking about? I don't care much for Bush Administration policy on such things, but I know of no cases of US citizens or residents being held incognito; is there any additional information on this you care to share?

As it is, whoever replaces John Ashcroft as Attorney General is going to have a hard time explaining to the Supreme Court why the Guantanamo detainees (who are foreigners captured abroad) are neither POWs nor criminal suspects and thus have no rights that the US government need respect. Claiming that about US citizens would be a much tougher sale.

Would have been much cleaner to simply have suspended Habeus Corpus like Abraham Lincoln did during the Civil War. Unfortunately, it appears that Mr. Bush would rather hide behind a legal fiction, than to act openly and honestly, which is why he will never be regarded as a great president by anyone but his own contemporary partisans.
