Let's make this simple...

1. Any application which is installed on a PC without the knowledge or permission of the user and is intended to track usage for any purpose is spyware and wholly illegitimate.

2. Software that is nominally installed with the user's permission, but in ways that are intended to trick the user into giving consent is no more legitimate than that which is surreptitiously installed.

3. Any website owner or application developer that surreptitiously installs software on users' machines , for whatever purpose, is the moral equivalent of a burglar and deserves every last bit of contempt heaped upon him.

I spent 2.5 hours clearing a friend's machine of adware yesterday. I think I can confidently state that the owners of the machine had no idea that any of the 800+ objects discovered were even there, much less gave consent to their installation.
