Just another reason not to trust Microsoft or Certificates. I was never concerned about using e-commerce until this type of info started surfacing. I plan on informing everyone I know and perhaps start phoning in orders or using local merchants more. The only reason these people exist is that merchants (yes, an academic institute is a merchant) pay them for the information. If customers stop patronizing e-commerce merchants in protest, negatively impacting their pocketbook, maybe they'll get the message.

I'm surprised the credit card companies and banks haven't jumped on this--they are on the hook for fraudulent charges, one would think they would try and plug all potential holes as major as this one. But, they too, collect the same data and sell it to marketers; so it's like the pot calling the kettle black.
