You're assuming that it's ok for spyware/adware to be installed on a user's computer without first asking permission to do so. If one gives permission to install it, then pop up windows are'nt needed. I don't want ANYTHING (not shouting, just emphasizing) installed on my computer without my knowledge. I use spyware removal tools and am constantly removing data miners that were put there without my permission. I look through privacy policies and accept very few that inform me they will track and sell my info to 3rd parties, always opt out if given the choice. If it is freeware, then maybe that's the price one pays for freebies, but it should be made very, very clear in bold, simple statements that they can intercept your useage of the internet and collect sensitive data. They are just as vunerable to hackers and dishonest employees as anybody else. If they are not upfront and clear in what they are doing, then there is NO difference between them and a malicious hacker. They can claim they strip data, but the data is there at a point in time, ergo it can be had for unauthorized use. Particularly troubling is that secure websites are compromised; doesn't do much to instill consumer confidence in e-businesses; I'll sure be more careful in the future.
In a society where one is on camera an average of 36 times a day, cyber and financial terrorism are just a possible and as, or more, devastating than the 9/11 attack, there is no compelling reason for an honest company to be secretive about their public actions. Personally, I have very little use for advertisers and marketeers, they are as dishonest as politicians, but that's another discussion. - Posted by: Middle of the Road Posted on: 12/20/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
