A last hurrah?
As upbeat as the OSS crowd wants to make it, the struggle to raise some funds to publish the NYT ad illustrates the lack of wherewithall endemic to the OSS/linux world. Companies selling linux in commercial circumstances ala' IBM as an economical alternative to classic Unix will make money in both the sale of the linux licenses and the sale of support contracts. Linux is no different than Windows 2K3 in this regard and ships at about the same price.

Free Linux and Mozilla make for an effective alternative to Windows XP although it is not at all clear if the suppliers can truly stay the course over the long haul. It took Mozilla an awful long time to come up with the Firefox version that is a reasonable alternative to IE. What is going to compel them to create a sequel and how long will that take?
