Really though the Browser is kind of key but it's really time dependent. If Microsoft takes too long then the browser could take over as the interface of independent platform apps run via a server. You could switch from Microsoft to Linux to Apple on the desktop with little effect in the corporate world.

Microsoft want to lock you in to the IE browser with things like active X controls and ASP.NET. If this takes too long to occurr then MS loses. That's why Microsoft is not focusing on the browser but more on the web application end of things. If they can get you stuck with Active X and ASP.NET apps then you are stuck using IE even it is a piece of crap because it was ignored.
