There are some licenses
Apple has licensed FairPlay to some vendors, particularly some of the audiobooks folks. But right now it's their competetive advantage, and they're going to hold on to it as long as they can. Maybe it's not the nicest thing in the world, but it does make business sense.

---And on the note of burning to a CD and ripping to MP3---

I believe there's a program called Hymn that can remove the DRM from iTunes purchases without lowering the sound quality. But for Real purchases, I don't see any difference between converting an album to a cassette and burning a Real track to a cd and converting it to an mp3. You buy it in one particular format, and if it loses some sound quality in the conversion, that's the way it goes.
