I agree, but not for the reason you claimed
They put themselves out of the market with high prices and proprietary parts. But IBM wasn't the only one, Compaq did it too and look where they are. Remember those proprietary hard drives, pain in the you know where if you ever reformatted them. Also could add a non compaq drive unless you happened to know a compaq tech who had that little utility.

It's been proven again and again that going proprietary limits how a company can grow. Just look at the lost opportunities that Sony had vs VHS or IBM and Compaq had vs DELL or Apple did vs IBM.

It's not business destroyer but I'd invest in the other guy.
