I'm sorry, what on Earth did Apple do that was sneaky here? Immediately after Real Networks started selling tracks that would play on iTunes, Apple made it extremely clear they didn't approve of it and that future firmware updates would likely make the songs non-playable on iPods. They made absolutely no attempt to hide that fact. I mean, it was part of their official press release responding to Real.

As far as not playing MP3s, what on Earth makes you think they'd do that? Have they ever claimed any concerns about playing MP3s on the iPod? Remember Rip, Mix, Burn?

While I understand this move will upset some folks, it's not like Apple didn't tell everyone up front what was going to happen.
