My stats for a similar product ...
I am using a product named diskMETA via WINE on Linux. With it I experience no measurable CPU usage when it is idle. There is a brief 100% CPU usage hit on startup. Searches are almost instantaneous with little measurable CPU usage. As an experiment, I just ran an indexing run on 15GB of drive data. The first phase ran for 10 min. with 100% CPU saturation. The second phase took 3.5 minutes with 100% CPU saturation. The third phase took 18 minutes with 100% CPU saturation. The fourth phase took 1 minute with 100% CPU saturation. During this process 32,153 files comprising 315 MB were processed. The free version which I am using does not index PDF or compressed files. I suspect those would take longer. At no time in the process did I experience lack of responsiveness from the system, but I did not run any other CPU intensive process concurrently either. The system I used for this test has a 2.8Ghz P4. So I suspect that these tools ARE CPU intensive, but then there is no free lunch. I really like this tool, consider it very useful, and am happy to pay for it in terms of CPU. I am planning to buy the enhanced version in the future and look forward to being able to test drive it on another system.
