I 've been using Copernic Desktop Search for a while. It didn't ask for anything when I downloaded it or installed it, and my firewalls say it hasn't even tried to phone home once.

And it works well. 450,000+ files indexed, and more than 11,000,000 keywords used. I shudder to think what Windows would have done had I let it try to index the same amount of data.
