Video Search
I have no doubt that Video Search is one of the Internets next big frontiers. The issue, which needs to be addressed, is that the current technologies that our most popular search engines utilize right now do not know how to crawl and index dynamic pages. Many of today's Web sites do not consist strictly of flat HTML documents like they were a decade ago, so the crawlers that Yahoo and Google use just don't understand them. They look for text, like ".mov" or ".avi," and for any keywords and links that might be in a document and that might give a sense of what type of content is there. The problem is that with many of the popular video sites that are on the Web today, those crawlers find only a small percentage of the video that?s currently available.

Yahoo is trying to address the problem with new standards like ?Media RSS? however how much can we rely on video providers to ?submit? feeds. Google?s plan to search the closed-caption text is fine for present and future video but that is still text based and relies on a technology that is not used in much video productions. I am hopeful that when we are aware of more of the facts on what is being developed that they have address the issue from a new angle. These two approaches are workarounds at best and are only going to scratch the surface when it comes to identifying the millions of video files on the web. There are many hurdles that will need to be cleared as we move forward with video search. I suggest that you look into the recent launch of http://www.truveo.com/. They?re approach is generating a new buzz and its worth some research and perhaps a follow up article on this topic. Keep up the good work!
