I have yet to see a serious argument in favor of abolishing copyright from a ZDNet poster. What many of us oppose are copyrights thst are virtually in perpetuity (kind of like the 10,000 year contracts one alleged religious society signs its instructors to). The existing copyright term has little to do with encouraging creative work and everything to do with maintaining existing monopolies as long as possible. It's far too long as it is, and the now routine extensions of the term every 20 years are a transparent effort to insure that nothing ever again falls into the public domain unless specifically assigned to it. Im the long term, this is damaging to creativity, as it encourages copyright holders to recycle old material ("tried and true"), instead of developing new material. Also, as in the current case, a lot of old material may never see the light of day because it's not being published and the rightful copyright owner can't be found.

I'm actually in favor of proprietory software (I work for a proprietory developer, matter of fact), but I'm also in favor of real competition in the industry (not pseudo-competition with a dominant vendor) and in the rights of developers to share their code on whatever terms they desire, without being harrassed by frivolous lawsuits backed by specious IP claims. It's self-interested gimmickry I oppose, not copyright and not proprietory software.
