I don't think it is always as simple as that.

Under the one plan proposed by Root User, extending a copyright to 10 years would be economically viable for everyone, and if after 10 years the product still had value it could easily be taken out another 10 years. Specifically on the software side, this would ensure that those making investments in software (sweat or capital) would have their returns protected, and therefore "original" innovation would continue. At the same time, incremental innovation would be better allowed to flourish as well. Regarding your statement "they simply want everything for nothing...", this would only apply to 20 or perhaps 30 year old software. I say, if they want to run an original version of MS DOS for free; "Knock yourself out!". Of course, under the model proposed this would ony happen if MS didn't feel that a circa 1984 rev of DOS was worth protecting any more.
