Japan's not a good example for your case.

Of course none of this would be necessary if most smokers didn't think it was their god given right to blow smoke at someone eatting, or toss their cigarette butts on the street. I don't see this problem in other countries, like Japan...

In Japan, where, last I heard, anti-smoking hysteria has been less effective, the life expectancy was continuing to increase. In the US, it has been stable or declining at the same time the number of smokers was decreasing.

Could it be because of the proven benefits of smoking? You know, reduce stress, improve judgment, increase calm and energy simultaneously.

One researcher commented in public that the problem was never nicotine, which has been found beneficial in more and more ways, but in the delivery system. I assume he was horse-whipped for his candor, particularly since this was government funded research. How'd that ever get through.

For a contrarian like me, cigarettes are a very successful topic. And if you have experience with (officially) now-expired systems of government in which the State presumed to tell you exactly how to live, with criminal penalties for disobedience, you'd recognize the joys of resistance.
