I think times have changed

Even the independent developer can't do what they did 5 or 10 year ago. I've tried and it's just not worth the time and effort. You can't compete with the big boys. All that happens is you come up with solution to problem and try to sell it but in the corporations just develop it themselves.

As for work for hire. Most corporation's don't sell the software that they develop in house. It's just no feasible to do so. In house developed software is very specific to the needs of the corporation. Since no two corporations are the same thier need differ. That's why large shrink wrap software companies bundle solutions into thier packages in hopes that that bundle will cover enough needs for thier customers.

Open source, GPL or what ever, will not directly cost job. For every job lost a job is gained. If someone tells you OSS will generate jobs then I'd say they are wrong. For the time being proprietary or open source will maintain the current growth and jobs that we experience today. It won't make much differnce one way or the other.

As time goes on programing will get easier and easier to the point where the average user just tells the computer what they need and the computer will develope the app on the fly. This is just the evolution of the computer industry.
