This only applies to changes made to the GPL'd product. If you make your custom features as a plugin, you are under no obligation to release it as open source. The only time you have to GPL your product is if you use GPL'd code IN your product. And that is only if you try to sell your product. I can use GPL'd code internally all day long and am under no obligation to release my code.
