Remind me again exactly what is at risk here?

A monopoly on the channels of distribution of entertainment. Without that, the labels and studios don't have the leverage to demand draconian terms of artists. As long as you have to go through them to be heard or seen, they have control. If artists can do this for themselves, why pay the RIAA/MPAA? Their legitimate economic function (developed in the days when publicity and distribution were expensive) is rapidly becoming obsolete and they are going to fight it with everything they have. Ultimately, they will lose. It could take a very long time, though.
