"...no reasonable user would want..."??
The reasonable user wants a browser and a media player, and has no philosophical principles that would prevent him from accepting them as part of the operating system (not bolted, part of). Particularly when incorporating them into the operating system creates functionality not available otherwise.

Yes, sometimes the "user" is another computer and sometimes the requirements of a business user are limited, but I'm taking "reasonable user" as a home user or business user with a variety of uses for a pc.

Be careful about generalizing from a small group of users to the hundreds of billions using pc's.
