Creative Commons is nice, flexible
Creative Commons is a nice, flexible solution - they have several licenses that range from more proprietary to more open source licences.

They also allow the author to mark their product with symbols that make it more clear to the average person what they can / can't do. So those who don't understand the legalese (let's face it: most of us aren't layers!) can still know what they can/can't do.
