You are partly correct
MSN always used search listings from Overtures Services a subsidiary of Yahoo until recently. There was a time during the transition when MSN search (search.msn.com) was using their new technology while (www.msn.com) search box used Yahoo listings hence there was difference between the results for the same search strings on the above mentioned webpages.
But now both MSN.com and search.msn.com uses MSN search technology.
