Antitrust and monopolies

I do agree that antitrust regulations are not terribly effective. They do exist, and AT&T can attest to the results when the govenment actually applies them. In case you're too young to remember, AT&T was THE phone company, and the feds broke them up. Unfortunately, after the initial spate of competition, the regional Bells have become monopolies all over again.

As far as any one company being able to gain a monopoly on VOIP, I'd have to think that would be a pretty tough row to hoe. Unlike POTS, VOIP doesn't need the massive infrastructure expense that provides an all but insurmountable barrier to entry. Additionally, VOIP by its nature does not allow for the local monopolies that the regional Bells can maintain.
