So why don't the Bells just switch to Internet phones?

They just close down their operations and phone carriers, take back their phone lines, and become internet providers that give good internet service and phone service as one. Since they would "own" the lines, they would then make other competators pay for the use of their lines, which would give them a huge price advantage. Granted, people would be upset because they couldn't get "normal" phones anymore, but let them complain to the FCC then.

The FCC basically said, "We're going to let the Bells die." So instead of waiting for that to happen, they should kill themselves and rebuild as an internet powerhouse.
