Just because it's their right doesn't mean it's intelligent

You're right, as owners of the goods, the movie studios have the right to distribute or not distribute their property as they see fit, within the confines of the law. So there is not reason why they have to make their content less expensive or available in other mediums.

My point is I think that the proliferation of piracy is an indication that demand exists that could be exploited to increase the movie industry's profits. So instead of capitalising on a market opportunity they are criminalising the members of that very market.

In other words, I think what they are doing is stupid. They have the opportunity to descrease their distribution costs (bits are cheaper to distribute than discs) while significantly increasing the convenience to consumers (downloading is more convenient than going to the video store). Instead they are suing their potential customers.
