I really think that you are missing the point of using IE or another browser. Particularly when you are talking about HTML. Microsoft uses non-standard HTML commands or extrastandard items as you have said. Therefore, you must be writing more to incorporate them into a web page. By REMOVING the non-standard items, you make web pages that are compatible with all browsers that are designed to use the current standard. This equates to less time spent designing each web page.

BTW I use Firefox primarily because of the vulnerabilities of IE that are so well known, and as a Software Engineer, I find that M$ software, particularly IE are just not up to the job anymore that I require from them. When it comes to viewing web sites, I have found a few that are written for IE only, and so far as viewing is concerned it was horrific. So I went and looked at the source of the page, comparing it with standard HTML, and found that most of it was fine, with only a few M$ commands. So what conclusion can you draw from that? Is it the M$ extras that cause most problems? OR Is it that some web page designers and writers simply cannot put together a decent page or site?

Basically I am quite satisfied that your assertion "Someone deciding not to be IE-only is accepting more work for less result" is incorrect. Adding extra or non-standard extensions to code increases the complexity, whether you are talking about web pages, or software, so that in the long term you are going to pay the price of having easily exploited vulnerabilities. Unless you are TOTALLY into using IE as your browser, and you like having a vulnerable computer because of it, I would heartilly recommend that it is time to seriously consider using another browser.
