And a good one

Actually, the decision pre-dated me, and we never got to the point where we had to make the tough decision. But there are several factors at work here.

One is cost. There is first the requirement to test any mod against every browser we support. This is not an option - final acceptance test is a must, nothing goes out the door without the door without it, and the more browsers support ed the higher the cost. There is also support cost. We have to retain expertise to meet any call or note to the webmaster.

There comes a time at which you have to declare an end. Sure 90% is purely arbitrary, but think about what it means. Common wisdom is that Windows commands 95% of the desktop. If IE hit 90% (other than in ZDnet articles and talkback), that would mean that the composite competition only hit 5%. Eventually competition would have reached the point of non-sustainability, and so we had settled on the 90% figure as a point to consider being one of the sites that dropped out, potentially further accelerating the decline.

On reflection, this is not writing off that much of the audience. If they have Windows they have IE, so they could switch. Some would not, but some would.

As I say, it's arbitrary, but there is a cut point somewhere. Fortunately we never had to face it.
