Does following standards help or hurt?

But all of this is a good thing because it is serving as a wake up call to IE only website designers. It is time to start following standards or you will continue to lose customers due to your short sighted laziness.

Designing for IE covers most of the market, and even those who don't use IE primarily usually have the browser available.

The extrastandard parts of IE are there for a reason. They either make life easier or improve the user experience.
The programmer is not the only one working on the site. Others may have to change their work as the result of the decision not to be IE only.
Here's an assertion for you to consider:
Someone deciding not to be IE-only is accepting more work for less result.

The only advantage is the satisfaction of a few people who use alternate browsers and are intolerant of a site that does not cater to them.
It's reasonable for someone to want his browser choice respected. Still, is the population insisting on a site designed for browsers other than IE large enough to make the effort worthwhile?
