You're assuming
That browser "requirements" are static. If they are, FF will stagnate and IE can catch up. As you know, MS has commingled the browser code with that of the OS, and consequently has made change management very cumbersome and slow(something many of us lived through in the past).

If continual upgrade of browser capabilities is a desirable thing - and I'll confess I don't know, I only learn the value of a capability after trying it - there is a continued place for FF. If on the other hand the browser reaches a leveling-off point, FF will probably cease to serve a useful purpose.
