Here's a hypothesis to consider:
If the only software generating revenue came from Microsoft, after a while all software will come from Microsoft.

Yes, I know about non-service ways people find to get paid for open source software. Good. Mr. Stallman's ideas are a danger for the industry to the degree he's taken seriously and/or his recommendations followed.
