Best I've been able to do is turn computers into appliances that require maintenance sometimes. The good news is that they've often been talked into paying too much for a pc with capabilities they'll never use, so the protecting investment approach can work.
Worth noting again that outside computers (where there's some kind of image problem) these are good, intelligent, caring people. Hate to put it this way, but some of my best friends are happily computer illiterate.
I think this problem won't get solved until people start to think of computers as a tool with some sensitivity about how it's treated. Seems a downside of the joy many take in computers.
