You don't delete something you paid for!
Since MP3 files are not DRM encoded, they are largely available for free. People will often download an MP3, listen for a while, and then delete it. Most WMA and AAC files that are downloaded come from music stores and are DRM encoded; they cost money. Most people aren't going to delete something that they paid money for. I think this may be a very large reason for the shift that is being seen.
