RE: What is AOHell Doing?
You are partly right towards the end of your post. AOL's new browser is designed to be a part of AOL lite. AOL has a new dialer so that third party apps can use the internet without starting up the whole memory hogging AOL software. That's where the new stand alone browser comes in. They want you to stay with AOL now. We've been suggesting and asking for an AOL Lite for years. Now that they are losing subscribers, they give us the AOL dialer.

They extended the use of IE because MS was threatening to remove AOL setup software from the Windows CD. They couldn't afford that. With the new browser, they have you using an AOL brand, still. Of course you can be sure all links go back to AOL branded sites.

Another thing AOL is doing is preparing an AOL branded Office suite, built on OpenOffice.org. Does MS and Sun's settlement make sense now? MS indemnified users of Sun's Star Office, but not the users of OpenOffice.org or any derivative software. I don't think MS will go after any OpenOffice.org users, but I do think they will rattle the sabers any time AOL gets too close to "copyright infringement" with the file format flexibility of OpenOffice.org.
