- Netscape 7.2 Beats Firefox in Rendering Pages
-
I keep reading in the IT press about how great Firefox is, like its some kind new revolution in browsers. As a long time Netscape user I can tell you that while Firefox is fast it does a lousy job of rendering web pages. I have both browsers on my PC.
For an example visit: www.netscape.com using both browsers. Unlike many web sites www.netscape.com codes to Netscape/Mozilla HTML 4.01 standards based browsers. If you look at the Netscape daily poll on the Breaking News page, there is no "vote" button displayed in Firefox. My guess is this is a Java error. Tables and subtitles are frequently wrapped incorrectly. Visit other popular sites, overall its a mess in Firefox. Don't even bother with IE coded sites like Microsoft and Intel.
Since Netscape and Firefox are both supposed to be built on the same Mozilla open source project code bae, it makes me wonder how Netscape does such a better job of rendering than does either Mozilla or Firefox.
Evidently the Netscape programmers still retained by AOL really know what they are doing when it comes to designing browsers. I have yet to read any mention of these rendering disparities in any articles published in the mainstream computer press.
If you don't like the AOL pop-up ads in Netscape go into the Privacy and Security preferences, check the box to suppress popups and then delete all of the allowed company name exceptions (AOL advertisers) from the allowed popup list.
Why 90+% of the population still sticks with ancient out-of-date, sluggish IE is just beyond me. The only time I use IE is to run MS-Update, and then its a constant stream of pop-ups and pop-behinds. Add to that the almost weekly security breaches found in IE.
MS just announced another 22 security issues most of which are in IE. The only reason IE was ever faster than Netscape is because its sucking about 1.5 - 2.5 GB's of hard drive space to use for its browser cache. Netscape typically comes configured to use only 50 MB of disk cache space. Set IE to this amount and it runs like a slug. Now who has the faster browser? - Posted by: mooreman_z Posted on: 10/14/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
